Dubai Summer Surprises 2020 – The Most Extravagant Summertime Fiesta of the Region

While many residents of Dubai escape the unbearable heat of the region by going on vacations to more pleasant places, the ones that stay behind are met with the most exciting and extravagant event of the season; The Dubai Summer Surprises (DSS). But what exactly does it entail? Why is it so celebrated? Well, I’m glad you asked, this is one of my favourite things about summer in Dubai, and boy, do I have a lot to talk about it!

The DSS is mainly focused on presenting the residents and tourists with the best shopping experience, by providing them the most jaw-dropping offers, thrilling contests, and shop-and-win campaigns. The event commenced on the 9th of July this year and will continue till the 29th of August. Although shopping takes the centre-stage, this summer gala is also packed with additional thrilling components such as compelling deals for leisure and entertainment enthusiasts, exhibitions, concerts, and other fun activities. Hence making it the perfect period for enjoying quality time with your family and friends who have various interests (taking into consideration the weather, of course). You can take them shopping to different malls, get your adrenaline pumped by having a blast in one of the theme parks, enjoy the cinema, have a relaxing spa or staycation at one of the hotels and many more, all on a budget!

If you grew up in Dubai, you must be familiar with the sunshine-yellow coloured, playful, and chirpy mascot of the festivities, Modhesh. I’m sure we’ve all owned at least one merchandise of Modhesh when we were kids. The mascot has become somewhat of a staple icon of summertime, here, in Dubai. He pops up in various places around the city – streets, malls, theme parks, you name it! – throughout the DSS to promote the event. Our friend even has his own theme park, the Modhesh World, which attracts many families with young ones. This year, the beloved mascot has undergone a redesign and has gained a new partner in crime, Dana. She is described as being “a scientist at heart” who “wants to be an astronaut” and is “a pioneering spirit, a perfectionist, fiercely inquisitive and imaginative.” Do you think this redesign will be successful, or did they meddle with a faultless model?

Here are some other highlights for this year’s DSS (check out the sources below for more detailed information):

15.     Supporting the Fight against Covid-19 by Shopping for a Cause

I want to elaborate on the last event mentioned on the list, shopping for a cause to help fight Covid-19. Mercato Mall’s ‘Shop and Save Lives’ campaign will donate AED 1 from every AED 100 spent at the mall, to the UAE Homeland of Humanity’s efforts of battling the virus. This campaign is supported by the  Emirates Red Crescent and the Department of Islamic Affairs and Charitable Activities.

In light of the current situation with the virus, with an average of 200-400 new cases per day in the UAE, shopping centres have placed several precautionary measures. Some of these include mandatory wearing of masks, checking of temperature at the entry point, social distancing, regular sanitation of common areas, and encouraging smart payment. Various malls have different sets of regulations; please check and follow them accordingly (some sources are listed below). The country’s government web portal advises its residents to perform online shopping in UAE for all sorts of items, including daily necessities, to ensure the residents’ safety. The safety of online shopping has been substantiated by leading health organisations such as the CDC and WHO, here’s what they had to say on the matter. The Centre of Disease Control stated, “There is likely very low risk of spread from products or packaging that are shipped over a period of days or weeks at ambient temperatures.” The World Health Organisation reinforced this statement by saying, “The likelihood of an infected person contaminating commercial goods is low and the risk of catching the virus that causes COVID-19 from a package that has been moved, travelled, and exposed to different conditions and temperature is also low.” Thus increasing the popularity of online shopping amongst customers during these testing times.

The best thing about DSS is that its sales galore in every store, including the ones online! Marhabha is an online shopping website based in Dubai, UAE. We were established in 2016, and our main aim is to provide the customers accessibility to authentic imported brands that are not easily available in the U.A.E. Additionally, we also produce products consisting predominantly of high quality leather goods, sourced from India, under the brand name of Uxurious. So what are you waiting for? Shop at Marhabha this DSS and receive up to 60% OFF on ALL ITEMS. The promotion is valid from 6th to the 15th of August.
